Navy Falls to Army in Volleyball

Caitlin Machon's 23 kills helped lead Army to a four-game victory over Navy, Friday night in West Point.  The Black Knights defeated the Midshipmen, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 30-23.

"Give the credit to Army," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob.  "They came out ready to play from the first point of the match and sustained that energy throughout the match."

Navy fell to 12-11 on the season, 4-4 in the Patriot League.  Army imnproved to 9-14 and 3-5.

Game one featued six ties, with the last coming at 23-23 when the Black Knights scored the final-seven points of the game.  Game two was similar with 15 ties, the last coming at 22-22, when Army scored seven-straight points to take a 29-22 lead.

Navy broke open a 14-14 tie in game three by scoring seven-straight points then, after Army closed to 25-21, scored back-to-back points to take a 27-21 lead.  Army scored four-straight points of their own before Navy ended the game with a 3-0 run.

Navy held an 18-16 lead when Army scored seven-straight points to take a 23-18 lead.  After a Navy sideout, the Black Knights went on a 6-0 run to lead, 29-19.

Army hit .298 on the night, well ahead of Navy's .211, and recorded 63 digs and eight blocks to 52 digs and three blocks.

Navy was led by 11 kills from Erica McElroy and Ashley Van Hartesvelt.

Navy will continue its road trip Saturday night with a 7 p.m. match at Holy Cross.
