Lawrenceville, N.J. - Senior Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Breckenridge, Colo.) recorded a match-high 23 kills to lead the Navy volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson Friday night at the Cranberry Classic in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Midshipmen improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in tournaments this season with the 30-21, 30-22, 36-34 victory over the Knights.
"I thought we built some pretty good leads in the first-two games, but Fairleigh Dickinson woke up and fought back in the third game," head coach Mike Schwob said.
Navy, as a team, had a .277 hitting percentage to FDU's .161. The Mids also totaled 57 kills to the Knights' 39, as Navy won its second-consecutive match after dropping its first of the season to Air Force last Saturday at home.
Senior team captain Katey Geary (San Jose, Calif.) added 10 kills for Navy and junior outside hitter Ashley Musser (Industry, Pa.) totaled 41 assists and registered six service aces. Freshman Diane Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also turned in a solid performance with eight kills.
"Offensively, we got solid production from Ashley (Van Hartesvelt) and Katey," Schwob said. "Ashley (Musser) was terrific in setting up our offense tonight."
Fairleigh Dickinson was led by Elena Schmidt and Sharon Becker, who totaled 10 and nine kills, respectively.
The Cranberry Classic will conclude Saturday with Navy competing in two matches. The Mids will begin the day with a match against tournament-host Rider at 10 a.m., and will follow that with a match at noon, versus La Salle.
