Women's Track & Field in Second Place After First Day of Patriot League Championship
Sophomore Allison Barlow claimed Second-Team All-Patriot League honors in the 10,000 meters Friday. |
Easton, Pa. - The Navy women's track & field team stands in second place with 39 points following the first day of competition at the 2005 Patriot League Outdoor Championship at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.
Bucknell is in first place with 77.33 points, while Army rounds out the top three with a third-place score of 24 points.
"We had an awesome first day here at the championship," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "Loni (Forsythe) was amazing and it was exciting to see so many of our runners do so well in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles. The final day should be really exciting to watch."
Several mids enjoyed strong opening days at the championship, including sophomore Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who placed first in the preliminaries of the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Forsythe recorded a time of 12.21 in the 100 meters and turned around an hour later to post a top time of 25.13 in the 200 meters. The final of both events will be held Saturday. Forsythe is the defending champion in the 200 meters.
Forsythe wasn't the only midshipman to enjoy a stellar Friday in hopes of earning league gold on Saturday. Sophomore Danielle Still (Lawnside, N.J.), classmate Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.), senior co-captain Katie Scotidas (Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshman Sabrina Gambill (Bridgewater, Mass.) placed first, second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles. All four qualified for the final tomorrow at Fisher Field.
Several finals were also held during the first day as Navy was well represented in those. Sophomore Allison Barlow (Orange Park, Fla.) and Andrews each captured Second-Team All-Patriot League honors by placing second in the 10,000 meters and pole vault, respectively. Barlow recorded a time of 37:08.70 to earn her first outdoor league honor, while Andrews vaulted a height of 10'11-3/4" to claim second-team honors.
Navy's 4x800-meter relay team also placed second in the finals of its event with a time of 8:54.89. Members of the team included sophomore Erin Demchko (Nanuet, N.Y.), freshman Stefanie Peskosky (Charlotte, N.C.), classmate Vicki Moore (Burke,Va.) and senior co-captain Tineisha Davis (Madisonville, Ky.).
The final day of the league championship will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at Fisher Field.
