Mids Beat Rider and Lafayette
The Navy women's swimming and diving team opened the 2002-03 dual-meet season with a pair of victories over Lafayette and Rider, Saturday afternoon at Lejeune Hall. The Mids beat the Leopards, 182.5-95.5, and the Broncs, 164-114. "The coaches are real pleased with our competitiveness this early in the season," said Navy head swimming coach Dick Purdy. "Today's meet, along with the Potomac Relays Friday night, made for two busy days for the team, but we are happy with the way the team responded to two meets in such a short time frame. Now we have to continue building upon our successful start to the new year." Navy started the meet out strong by winning the first five events contested. The team of Tori Throckmorton (So., Ann Arbor, Mich.), Laurie Felker (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), Rebecca Baldwin (Sr., Pittsgrove, N.J.) and Megan Welsh (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) opened the day by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:04.27. Navy then went 1-2-4 in the 800 freestyle, with Meakin Poor (So., Winnetka, Ill.) winning the event in a personal-best time of 9:28.73, just under one second in front of teammate Jessica Box (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.). Jenn Windstein (Fr., Lancaster, Pa.) opened her Navy career by posting a time of 2:08.81 to win the 200 freestyle, with Katie Costello (Sr., Lynbrook, N.Y.) placing second in the event (2:12.35) and Allison Moon (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.) placing third (2:13.72). The Navy streak continued as Megan Barnett (Sr., Arlington, Va.) led all divers in winning the one-meter diving competition (247.35), followed by Throckmorton winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:07.26. Barnett would later record a winning score of 229.40 in the three-meter event. Felker was the top Navy finisher in the 100 breaststroke with a second-place time of 1:17.14, while team captain Kim Montague (Sr., Coppell, Texas) also placed second in the 200 butterfly with a clocking of 2:27.70. Moon recorded Navy's third-straight runner-up finish in the next event, the 50 freestyle, with a time of 27.92. Navy returned to its winning ways by sweeping the top-three spots in the 100 freestyle. Costello won the event with a time of 1:00.35, followed by Moon (1:01.32) and Mandy Minikus (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) (1:01.75). The Mids had another second-place finish in the next event, the 200 backstroke, as Brenna Schnars (Sr., Williamsport, Pa.) recorded a 2:31.60. Navy would later go 1-2-3 in the 400 freestyle, which saw Windstein pick up her second victory of the day. Montague again had a strong race in her next event, recording a 1:07.77 in the 100 butterfly. Her time was good enough for second place in the race, just three thousandths of a second in back of the winner, but with Navy already securing victory in both team dual meets, her race became an exhibition and her potential points did not count. Navy ended the day by exhibitioning its 400 freestyle relay team of Lauren Irrgang (Fr., West Chester, Pa.), Moon, Costello and Welsh, which recorded a top-time of 4:14.23. Navy will next be in action Oct. 26 when the Mids compete in a dual meet at George Mason.
