Women's Swimming Earns Two Wins
The Navy women's swimming and diving team earned its first victories of the season Saturday, defeating both Lafayette and Rider in a double-dual meet in Lejeune Hall. The Midshipmen (2-1) defeated Lafayette (0-2), 175-123, and Rider (1-1), 169-129. Rider also defeated Lafayette by a 169-131 score. The Navy victories follow a third-place showing by the Mids in the Potomac Relay Invitational, held Friday night at Georgetown. "The team showed a lot of determination today," said Navy assistant coach Chris Villa. "We were very happy with the way the team swam today, especially with it being our second meet in less than 24 hours." Navy recorded the top time in virtually every race. Individual event winners on the day for the Mids included Jessica Box (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) in the 800 freestyle (9:31.48), Jenn Windstein (So., Lancaster, Pa.) in the 200 freestyle (2:10.12) and the 200 butterfly (2:26.27), Tori Throckmorton (Jr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) in the 100 backstroke (1:07.91), Aubra Thomas (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 100 (1:14.70) and 200 breaststroke (2:45.75), Megan Welsh (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the 100 freestyle (1:01.48), Michelle Williams (Fr., Brandon, Fla.) in the 400 freestyle (4:42.49) and Julie Holland (Fr., Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the 200 backstroke (2:30.26). Navy's team of Lenaya Chamu (So., Miami, Fla.), Thomas, Throckmorton and Allison Moon (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:31.26, while Sheila Singer (So., Princeton, N.J.) won the one-meter diving with a score of 208.10. "It was an awesome weekend for Navy," said senior Natalie Schultz (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.). "We started off well last night at the Potomac Relays, then carried it over into today. There were a lot of great performances and a number of personal-best times by many people. It's difficult to narrow it down to just one or two people who stood out, but I thought Michelle Williams had a great meet for us." In addition to setting a personal-best time in winning the 400 freestyle by 15-hundredths of a second over Lafayette's Sara Berberich, Williams also placed fifth in the 800 free with a 9:39.86. Navy will next be in action Friday when the Midshipmen play host to George Mason in a 4 p.m. dual meet in Lejeune Hall.
