Day Two of Diving Meet Complete
March 11, 2006 ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- One day after strong performances at the NCAA Zone 'A' Diving Championship, Navy's Kevin Teague (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) and Katie Griffin (So., Ellicott City, Md.) struggled a bit during the second day at the championship Saturday in Lejeune Hall. Competing on the one meter Saturday, Teague stood in 12th place after the preliminary round with a six-dive score of 251.20. He would go on to score 287.65 points during the finals, however, to move into eighth place at the end of the day with an overall score of 538.85. His 36-point improvement from the trials to the finals was the second-largest increase in the field. Penn State's Adam Pierce won the one-meter event with an overall score of 691.60. Griffin placed 28th during the three-meter trials with a score of 198.90. "Both Kevin and Katie really finished strong today," said Navy head coach Joe Suriano. "They ended the day like champions by performing great dives. Both are still alive for NCAA berths." Teague placed fourth on the three meter Friday, while Griffin placed 16th on the one meter. The three-day championship comes to a conclusion Sunday with the 10-meter springboard event for both men and women. Teague, who will not dive Sunday due to his departure for military training in Florida, can advance to the NCAA Championship if Princeton's Kent DeMond wins the platform event, while Griffin will advance to the national championship if she wins Sunday's competition. The event starts at 11 a.m. and there is no admission charge. |
