Bonafede Named Patriot League Defensive Player Of The Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — After leading the Midshipmen to five-straight shutout wins, including a pair in last week’s action, Navy sophomore goalkeeper Kim Bonafede (Burke, Va.) has been named this week’s Patriot League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as presented by Brine. It marks the second time this season Bonafede has earned the weekly honor. She also earned the honor Sept. 10 after guiding the Mids to a 4-0 start with wins over Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, Air Force and Saint Louis.

Bonafede, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation for her 0.28 goals-against average, led Navy to back-to-back shutouts last week, earning wins over UMBC (2-0) and Bucknell (2-0). The Bucknell win gave the Mids their 15th shutout of the year, setting a school record. The previous mark was 14 set by the 1998 team.

Bonafede, meanwhile, now owns 11 shutouts and is just 1/2 shutout behind Navy’s single-season leader Sarah Wilson, who owned 11 1/2 in 1998. At that time, shutouts could be shared. That rule stood until last year when you had to play the entire game to get credit for the shutout.
