Five Mids Named to Patriot League Women's Soccer All-League Squad
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League Co-Regular Season Champion Navy put five players on the 2003 Patriot League Women's Soccer All-League Team announced Wednesday afternoon. In addition to Navy's five, top-seeded American, third-seeded Colgate and the sixth-place team in the league, Lehigh, also had five representatives on the first and second teams. In addition, Army, Bucknell and Lafayette each placed one player. Despite not making the four-team Patriot League Tournament, the Mountain Hawks took three of the four major awards, Defensive Player of the Year (Erin Iwaskiewicz), Freshman of the Year (Gina Lewandowski) and Coach of the Year (Manny Oudin). Meanwhile, Colgate's Kate Barrett was awarded the Offensive Player-of-the-Year honor after leading the league with 17 goals and 43 points. Midshipmen senior Stacy Finley (Alamo, Calif.) headlined Navy's five all-league selections. For the third-consecutive year, the three-time First-Team All-Patriot League forward paced the Mids in scoring, producing 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists, all team highs. Finley had a record book campaign, becoming Navy's all-time leading goal scorer with her game winner Oct. 3 against Delaware, while her hat trick just four days later against American gave her the Mids' title of all-time leader in points. Finley's 50-career goals ranks fourth in the Patriot League, while her 122 points is the sixth-best total in league history. Finley is eighth on the Mids' all-time assists list with 22, just five away from record holder Nadia Sheikh (1999-02). Earning First-Team All-Patriot League honors for the second-straight season is defender Xochitl Piedra (Wheaton, Ill.). One-of-four junior members of Navy's stifling defense, Piedra has been the cornerstone of the Mids' defensive line. She has led the Navy defense to its 1.08 goals-against average this fall, the fourth-lowest GAA in the program's history. Navy' defense has also produced eight shutouts this season, the fifth-best total in the Navy record book. Piedra helped spearhead a wall which limited the No. 1 team in the nation, North Carolina, to just one goal (in the 73rd minute) and the 25th-ranked Terrapins of Maryland to just two goals. Making her first appearance on the Patriot League all-league team is junior midfielder Stephanie Parker (Carmichael, Calif.), who was among five midfielders on the first team. A fair share of Navy's offense is generated out of the middle where most opponents can find the third-year starter. Parker produced all eight points on assists this spring, where she stands tied for eighth on the Mids' single-season assists list. Her career total of 18 is tied for 10th with team captain Amelia Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Texas). Parker produced two multiple-assist contests this fall, recording two assists in Navy's 3-1 victory over Columbia and two in the Mids' overtime loss to American. Speaking of Sheveland, the two-year starter earned Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition for the second-consecutive season as Navy's second-leading scorer. Tied with rookie Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.), Sheveland recorded 21 points on nine goals and three assists. She and Finley have been the premier forward tandem in the league for the better part of their careers. Sheveland ranks fourth on the Mids' all-time goals list with 35, while her 88-career points also ranks fourth. With her nine scores this fall, she is ninth on the Mids' single-season goals chart and just two points out of the single-season points leader board. Sheveland has scored goals in four of the last-six contests for the Midshipmen Finally, Navy goalkeeper Kim Bonafede was named to the second team for the second-straight year. The second-year starter out of Burke, Va., owns a 1.02 goals-against average, giving up 20 goals in nearly 1765 minutes of action. She has made 59 saves en route to six of the team's eight shutouts this fall. Those six shutouts put her tied for fourth on the Mids' single-season shutouts chart, while her 59 saves rank 10th. For her career, she owns a 0.36 GAA, the only keeper in Navy history to post a sub-1.00 GAA. It's also the Patriot League's best career GAA. Bonafede is coming off a strong effort against nationally-ranked Maryland in which she stopped a season-high tying seven shots. She was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times over the course of the season for her efforts, including this past Monday. 2003 Patriot League Women's Soccer All-League Team First Team Player, School Yr.
