Maryland Travels to Annapolis for Women's Soccer Tilt

Junior Sarah Hessinger has scored a goal and added a pair of assists in the last two games for the Mids.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the first time in series history, Maryland will travel to Annapolis to meet the Midshipmen in women's soccer action Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. All fans bringing a new, unwrapped toy will be admitted to the game free of charge. The toys collected will go to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drive. Additionally, the first 200 fans will receive a free Navy soccer t-shirt.

While its the first game between the two squads contested in Annapolis, the two teams are no strangers. The two have battled in four previous encounters, the last being last November when Maryland claimed a 2-1 victory over the Mids. The Terps own a 4-0 series advantage and last year's game marked the first time the Mids had scored a goal against Maryland.

Navy enters Tuesday night's contest riding a two-game winning streak with Patriot League wins over Lehigh (4-2) and Lafayette (5-0). With an 8-6-1 record, Navy has felt its share of bumps in the road this fall. But with a 7-0 record at home, the Mids are as confident as ever when playing in Annapolis. Navy's last loss at home was a 5-4 rainsoaked overtime loss to American Oct. 14, 2003. Since then, Navy has won eight in a row at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

The Mids are led by sophomore forward Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) who has turned in five goals and a team-best seven assists for 17 points this season. In the last two games, she has produced three goals, including game winners in both contests, and three assists to help keep the Mids in the mix for the Patriot League Tournament Nov. 5-7. Curran is just one goal shy of joining Navy's top-10 career goals scored list, scoring 14 in her two-year career. Rookie forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) is Navy's leading goal scorer with six on the season, while junior midfielder Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) has scored a goal and added two assists in the last two contests.

Navy has outscored its opponents 27-16 and senior goalkeeper Kim Bonafede (Burke, Va.) is giving up just short of a goal per game with a 0.96 goals-against average. With Navy's 5-0 triumph over Lafayette last Friday, Bonafede became Navy's all-time leader in shutouts, posting 21 during her career.

The Terrapins own a 5-4-3 record this year and are 2-3 away from College Park. Maryland is coming off a 2-0 shutout loss at Wake Forest over the weekend, its first loss since Miami nipped the Terps, 2-1, on Sept. 19. Maryland, it seems, has the same problem Navy has experienced much of the season, an inability to score. The Terps have score two or more goals just three times this season and all three of those games resulting in a Maryland win.

Junior midfielder Mallory Mahar has paced the Terps this season with a team-high six goals and one assist for 13 points, while junior midfielder/forward Kimmy Francis owns a three goals and a team-best four assists for 10 points. Defensively, sophomore Nikki Resnick holds court in the cage, giving up 12 goals this season for a 0.93 GAA. She owns an 83.1 save percentage, stopping 59 shots on goal.
