Navy Women’s Soccer Looks for Road Win at Lafayette

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy women's soccer team (10-3-1/2-1 PL) will look to rebound Saturday against conference foe Lafayette (4-7-4/1-2-1 PL) after suffering a 5-4 overtime loss at home Tuesday night against American. One-of-four teams in the league with just one loss, Navy plays its first of four-straight road contests Saturday evening at the home of the Leopards. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

After picking up where it left off a year ago as one of the most successful teams in the country, Navy has had its share of tough contests as of late. Since opening the season 7-0, the Mids are 3-3-1 over their last-seven games. After defeating Delaware, 3-2, in double overtime last Friday night in Annapolis, league foe American escaped the Yard with a 5-4 OT win over the Mids, handing Navy its first conference loss of the season.

Navy's traditionally-strong defense has allowed 10 goals in the last-three games, more than half of the goals its opponents have scored this season (18 total). The Mids' offense has tried to offset the goals allowed, as they have produced seven goals in the last-three games, including four by senior forward Stacy Finley (Alamo, Calif.). In fact, Finley became Navy's all-time leader in goals with the game winner versus Delaware before her three goals against American gave her the title of Navy's all-time leading scorer.

Forwards Amelia Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Texas) and Katie Eames (El Cerrito, Calif.) continue to balance the scoring with five and four goals, respectively, while Meggie Curran's (Silver Spring, Md.) presence has been noted by her five goals and two assists.

Lafayette has seen its share of ups and downs this season with a 4-7-4 mark, including a 1-2-1 record in the Patriot League. While starting the season 0-4-2, the Leopards have produced a 3-1-1 mark in its last-five contests, earning wins over St. Peter's (3-0), Iona (1-0) and Holy Cross (2-1). It has lost conference contests against American (4-2) and Lehigh (1-0), while holding Bucknell to a scoreless tie.

All-league midfielder Meghan Ramsey leads the Leopards with 15 points on four goals and a team-high seven assists. Meanwhile, rookie middie Kelli McMahon owns a team-best five goals, while added a pair of assists. Senior Kerrie Kiley has put away two of her three goals as game winners. Senior Marissa Mullins and junior Amy Kalista have split time in goal. Mullins owns a 1.30 goals-against average and is stopping 82.3 percent of the shots fired her way. Kalista, meanwhile, has giving up nine goals (1.17 GAA) and has tallied 61 saves (.871) in seven outings.

After stumbling, 7-1, in the inaugural contest between the two schools in 1993, Navy has since won 10-consecutive games against Lafayette. The Mids own a 5-1 series advantage in games played in Easton, including a 3-1 decision in the last game played on Lafayette soil, Oct. 13, 2001. Navy claimed a 2-0 victory in last year's contest with midfielder Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) and all-time leading scorer Stacy Finley (Alamo, Calif.) striking for goals.
