Navy Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to American

  • Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - American defender Meg Runeari scored in the 83rd minute off a direct kick to lead the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Navy women's soccer team Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C. While American moved to 2-1 in Patriot League action, the Midshipmen are 0-3 in the league, losing back-to-back one-goal games to Army and American, while Colgate posted a 3-1 win over Navy in its league opener.

Neither team had much of an advantage in the first half as just seven shots were taken, including only three shots on goal, as the halftime score was deadlocked at 0-0.

While both teams looked more energized in the second half, the game remained scoreless until the 82:18 mark when Navy keeper Kim Bonafede (Burke, Va.) came out of the box to play a lobbed ball and was handed a yellow card for a handball. The Eagles were awarded a direct kick and Runeari punctuated the Navy foul with her third goal of the year.

Navy's best chance to score was in the 79th minute when freshman forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) took the ball up the right side, eluded an AU defender and fired off a shot that made its way toward the left side of the net. AU keeper Alison Doyle made a diving save as she came out to challenge the shot, diverting the ball to a teammate who cleared the ball out of the box.

The Mids' three league losses are the most since the 1996 campaign and more losses (in conference play) than the previous three years combined (16-2-3).

Navy returns to action Friday when it plays host to league foe Lehigh at 7 p.m.
