Bresnahan Named Patriot League Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 2, 2007
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore center back Lauren Bresnahan (Weston, Fla.) has been named the Patriot League Brine Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Bresnahan, who is receiving the honor for the second time in her career, is the first Navy women's soccer player to be honored by the league this fall. A two-year starter on Navy's defensive unit, Bresnahan led the Midshipmen to a pair of victories last week, including Navy's fourth shutout of the year. She opened the week by contributing on both ends of the field in the Mids' 2-1 victory over VMI. Following a perfectly placed corner kick in the box by sophomore midfielder Brittany White (Carmel, Ind.), Bresnahan fought her way though a scrum in front of the goal long enough to gain control of the ball and boot in the game-tying goal in the 22nd minute. It was just the second goal of her collegiate career and the first this fall. Five days later, Bresnahan spearheaded a defensive effort that held Saint Francis (Pa.) without a shot on goal en route to a 1-0 Navy victory. Navy's defense surrendered a combined nine shots in the two games, including three on goal (all three taken by VMI). "Lauren is our leader in the back, and she has great pride in how we play defensively each game," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "We had a very solid defensive performance against Saint Francis (Pa.), and we will rely on this presence through all of our Patriot League games. Lauren has been great at 1v1 defending, dominant in the air and very organized in our defensive shape." The Midshipmen will be back in action on Friday when they open up Patriot League play against Bucknell. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Varsity Soccer Field in Lewisburg, Pa.
