Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to play host to Washington Freedom game
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy Director of Athletics Jack Lengyel announced Monday that the Naval Academy will play host to the nationally-televised (TNT) Washington Freedom vs. New York Power women's professional soccer game Saturday, Aug. 11 at 12-Noon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to host the Washington Freedom soccer team which features the outstanding Mia Hamm," said Lengyel. "This will provide an opportunity for the community, particularly the youth soccer teams to see one of the finest soccer players in the country." The Washington Freedom are coached by Jim Gabarra, a familiar name among the Annapolis and Naval Academy community. Gabarra's wife, Carin, is entering her ninth season as head coach of the Navy women's soccer team after leading the Mids from club-level status to Division I competition in 1993. The 6-8-2 Freedom are led by one of the premier players in all of women's soccer - Olympic Gold Medal winner Mia Hamm. Hamm has scored a team-high-tying five goals and added four assists, while Brazilian Pretinha has also scored five goals. Meanwhile, fellow Olympian goalkeeper Siri Mullinix is allowing two goals per game. "It's very exciting to have one of the best women's professional soccer teams in the country playing in our facility," said Carin Gabarra. "It's especially exciting for them to be playing during Navy's preseason. What better role models for our young women."
