United States Wins Bronze Medal at 2003 CISM World Military Games
ANNAPOLIS, Md — The United States defeated Canada for the second time in a week to take the bronze medal in women’s soccer at the 2003 CISM World Military Games in Warendorf, Germany. Germany, meanwhile, defeated the Netherlands in the gold medal game by a 7-3 count. Led by three Naval Academy graduates, including goalkeeper Lt. j.g. Sarah Wilson who guided the United States to a pair of shutouts, the U.S. defeated Canada in the opening round, 3-0, May 31. Navy grad Lt. Cristina Esposito scored the opening goal in the victory over the Canadians to send the U.S. into the second round with a 1-0 record. The U.S. was out-scored 8-0 in its next two games against the Netherlands (3-0) and eventual CISM Games victor Germany (5-0). The U.S. was down 1-0 against the Netherlands before succumbing to goals in the 89th and 90th minutes of the contest. Germany, meanwhile, used an abundance of national team members to dominate the tournament, surrendering less than five goals in the 2003 Games. In the bronze medal round, the U.S. once again stifled Canada’s offense and claimed a 1-0 win to post a 2-2 record.
Wilson spent all four games in goal for the U.S., while defender and Navy grad Lt. j.g. Tara Refo played every minute in every contest.
