Women's Crew Team to Race Saturday in Syracuse Smash

The Navy women's crew team will close its fall varsity season Saturday by competing in the Syracuse Smash in Syracuse, N.Y. The race, featuring pairs boats and contested on Onondaga Lake, will include boats from Cornell, Dartmouth, Rutgers and Syracuse.

"Rowing in a pairs race really helps prepare you for racing in an eight-person shell," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "With each person rowing on just one side of the boat and without having the luxury of a coxswain, a pairs boat can be very difficult to row. Balance between the two people is very important.

"This is just the second year for the race, but it is quickly becoming a very popular one. There could be up to 20 boats lined up across the lake in each race."

Hughes also took the time to reflect back on what he has called a very good fall season for his team.

"It's been a great fall for us," said Hughes. "We had a number of goals at the start of the fall and we achieved all of them. We had a strong showing against the top schools from across the country at the Head of the Charles, we won the Navy Day Regatta in both our first and second varsity boats, and we won the championship eight race at the Head of the Schuylkill for the first time.

"We look for our good fall results to lead us into a strong winter training period and then into a successful spring season."
