Crew Teams to Race in Saturday's Navy Day Regatta

Navy's heavyweight, lightweight and women's crew teams will each be in action this weekend as the programs compete in the annual Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia.

The event, which is sponsored by the Philadelphia Navy Yards, features some of the top crew programs from Philadelphia and its surrounding locales. The teams will compete in a head-style or single-file race, rowing 2.5 miles downstream on the Schuylkill River.

"It is still an early-season race for everyone, so it is hard to tell how things will pan out," said Navy women's coach Mike Hughes. "We have spent a lot of our time this fall working on our smaller boats, so we will see if our work pays off for us Saturday.

"I expect our top competition to come from fellow-league member Pennsylvania, along with a strong challenge from Army's club team."

Navy's lightweight team will be entering three varsity eights and two freshmen eight shells, with competition expected to come from Rutgers and Pennsylvania.

"Training is going very well and this race will prove to be a good test before the Head of the Charles," said Navy lightweight coach Rob Friedrich. "This race should give us a good idea of where we stack up against the rest of the league."
