Navy lightweight crew coach Rob Friedrich and Navy women's coach Mike Hughes recently announced the hiring of assistant coaches for their respective programs.

Joining the lightweight staff is Steve Perry, while Nicole Williams has been added to the women's staff. Both Perry and Williams will serve as assistants with their respective varsity teams, in addition to their duties as head novice coach for their programs.

Perry was the freshman rowing coach for the lightweight program at Pennsylvania last year after serving in the same role for two years at Rutgers. His Penn boat placed sixth at the 2002 Eastern Sprints, while his teams at Rutgers had fifth and sixth-place showings in his two years.

A 1999 graduate of Rutgers, Perry rowed for the lightweights in each of his four years and was named team co-captain as a senior. A three-year member and two-time MVP of the Rutgers varsity, he was a part of the silver-medal winning varsity eight boat at the 1999 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship.

"Steve Perry brings a wealth of coaching experience with him to our Navy program," said Friedrich. "He will fit in well here at the Naval Academy as his enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport are perfect in developing our freshmen rowers."

Williams joins the Navy program from Wesleyan where she was the head novice and assistant varsity coach for the women's crew team. A 2000 graduate of Washington College, Williams served as co-captain and was named team MVP of the crew team in her final season.

In addition to coaching at Wesleyan, where is completing work towards a Masters Degree, Williams was coordinator for the 2001 Head of the Connecticut Regatta and has coached with the Middlesex Youth Program, the Middletown Park and Recreation Rowing Program, and with the Navy Rowing Camp.

"Nikki comes to Navy with a real positive can-do attitude, which a coach can use to help bring success to their athletes," says Hughes. "Combining her attitude with her strong coaching skills makes her a great addition to our staff and program."
