ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's crew team will attempt to win its second Patriot League title in three years Sunday morning when the league's 2007 championship regatta is held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The three-race docket begins at 8 a.m. with the varsity four race, followed by the second varsity eight contest 10 minutes later and ending with the varsity eight race at 8:20 a.m.

The Mids won each of the three races in the inaugural 2005 championship to win the team title, with Bucknell winning the title over Navy last year. The Bison won the varsity eight and varsity four races in 2006, with the Mids placing second in those two contests and winning the second varsity eight race. Bucknell totaled 28 points over the three races to win the team championship, while Navy tallied 26 points to place second.

Bucknell again edged Navy for the top spot in the league's 2007 preseason poll. Both teams garnered five first-place votes, but the Bison accrued 29 overall points in the voting while the Mids tallied 28 points. Colgate placed third in the balloting with 19 points, followed by fourth-place Lehigh with 14 points and Holy Cross with 10 points.

Navy enters the weekend with its varsity eight boat having compiled a 13-2 record this season. One of those two setbacks, however, was a 1.7-second loss to Bucknell in the finals of the Murphy Cup March 24 in Philadelphia.

"The talent level of the league and its competitiveness has increased dramatically in its short history," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "Every race is going to be close with a number of boats having legitimate opportunities to win. I feel we have as good of a chance as any to win, but it will take a very good effort by each of our crews to do so."
