Joe Sanchez Resigns As Head Women's Basketball Coach At The Naval Academy
ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced Monday that Joe Sanchez has resigned as head women's basketball coach. "Our midshipmen, the Naval Academy Athletic Association, fans and friends are grateful to Coach Sanchez for his successful contributions to the Academy as our head women's basketball coach for the past nine years," said Gladchuk. "He has left the program on solid ground and as one of the most competitive in the Patriot League. We wish him the best of luck and continued success as he refocuses his personal priorities and career at the Academy." "I believe the program has never been as strong and solid as it is now," said Sanchez. "The talent that this team possesses with the seven returning seniors and our young players place them in a great position to win the conference title and advance to the NCAA Tournament next year. I am also extremely proud of the academic success of this team and I will miss them." Sanchez posted a 141-112 (.557) record in his nine years as head coach at the Naval Academy and a 448-286 (.610) record in his 25-year coaching career. His 448 career wins ranks 35th in NCAA history and his 734 career games coached ranks 29th in NCAA history. In just 12 years of Division I competition, the Navy women's basketball program has developed into one of the premier sports programs at the Academy, in large part under the direction of Sanchez. He guided Navy to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1997 and 1998 and directed the Midshipmen to the Patriot League Tournament title game in 1998 and 1999. Sanchez also dominated rival Army, posting a 17-5 mark in his tenure. Prior to Sanchez's arrival, the Mids were just 5-13 against the Black Knights. During his tenure, Sanchez has coached 15 first or second-team all-league selections, while eight players have been tabbed to the Patriot League all-rookie team. Sanchez will stay at the Academy and continue in his role as an Associate Professor in the Physical Education department.
