Men's Cross Country Places 10th at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional


Senior Joshua McCann placed 27th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday.

University Park, Pa. - The Navy men's cross country concluded its 2004 season Saturday with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Penn State Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pa.

The Mids finished with 278 points and were just eight shy of ninth-place Pittsburgh (270). It marked the fourth-consecutive year and seventh time in the last eight the Midshipmen finished among the top-10 teams in the standings.

"We were a long shot in this race, but the guys tried and competed," head coach Al Cantello said. "We accomplished some things this season that I'm proud of."

For the second-straight meet, Navy was led by senior Joshua McCann (Magnolia, Texas) who placed 27th in a time of 31:37. McCann, who will serve as captain of the 2005 indoor track team, was Navy's top runner two weeks ago at the Patriot League Championship as he earned first-team all-league honors with a seventh-place finish.

Junior Maksudul Ali (Gaithersburg, Md.) was the next Mid to cross the finish line as he placed 57th in a time of 32:23, and classmate Joshua Sink (Welcome, N.C.) followed in 61st with a time of 32:25.

Sophomore Dan Naughton (Long Beach, N.Y.) followed Sink in 62nd place in 32:27, while senior David Taveras (Cape Coral, Fla.) placed 71st with a time of 32:43.

Rounding out the top-seven runners for Navy was senior Barry Carmody (Elk Grove, Calif.) in 79th (32:48) and junior Ty Rose (Germantown, Tenn.) in 84th (33:00).

Georgetown won the race with 49 points, while American placed second with 63. By finishing as the top-two teams in the race, both schools advanced to the NCAA Championship on November 22 at Indiana State. Georgetown's Rod Koborsi placed first in the individual standings with a time of 30:24.
