The Navy men's cross country team, led by captain Aaron Lanzel (Sugar Grove, Pa.), was recently named as a team recipient of all-academic honors by the United States Cross Country Coaches Assocation (USCCCA).

Thirty-five members of the squad, comprised of both varsity and junior varsity student-athletes, were recognized for their cumulative grade-point average of 3.01 through the fall 2002 semester. In order to be considered for the honor, a team had to post a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Lanzel also earned individual all-academic honors by the USCCCA, as he has recorded a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.59 through his first-seven semesters at the Naval Academy. The electrical engineering major is also serving as the outdoor captain for the Mids' track and field team. He was one-of-45 members to earn the individual honor, which highlighted athletes with at least a 3.25 G.P.A. and either a top-15 finish or finish among the top-10 percent of regional runners and/or similar results at the NCAA Championship. Lanzel finished 18th out of 177 runners at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship.

"Not only is this great recognition for Lanzel as an individual," said Navy head coach Al Cantello, "But, it's impressive for every member of the varsity and junior-varsity teams to be honored. A number of freshmen had to be included into the cumulative G.P.A., as Lanzel served as captain for this special group."
