Navy Wrestling Falls to 13th-Ranked Penn State

Deon Barrett

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Navy wrestling team dropped a 41-3 dual match to 13th-ranked Penn State Saturday night in State College, Pa. Sophomore Deon Barrett (Freeport, N.Y.) was the only Navy wrestler to come away with a win on the night.

"This was our first chance to wrestle a ranked team and we really didn't show up tonight," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "I'm disappointed because we're capable of wrestling better. We had three guys get pinned and for our guys to get pinned is unusual. We competed hard and we had some young guys step up, but injuries to some key guys hurt us tonight. We have to regroup, come back and eliminate the mistakes we made."

Trailing 22-0 going into the sixth match of the evening, Barrett scored a 5-3 decision against Penn State's Jarrad Turner to win the 165-pound weight class.

Several Navy wrestlers came close to picking up victories. Freshman Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) fell in double overtime, 7-4, to 20th-ranked Matt Smith in the 133-pound weight class, while senior Andrew Hemminger (Annapolis, Md.) was edged out, 8-6, by James Yonushonis in the 174-pound division.

Navy returns to action Dec. 28 when the Mids travel to Lakeland, Fla., to compete in the Sunshine Open.
