Navy Wrestling To Compete at the Penn State Open Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team returns from the Thanksgiving break and will travel to State College, Pa., Sunday to compete in the Penn State Open.

"There is good competition at the Penn State Open and we always look forward to the challenge of wrestling up there," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "We're going to take 30 wrestlers and see how they compete. This tournament will also be a step up for our team. It is always interesting to see how the guys wrestle coming back from the Thanksgiving break."

Navy (3-0) is coming off a third-place finish at the Nov. 22 Navy Classic. Three Mids battled to second-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Nate Gulosh placed second in the 141-pound weight class, while Michael Carbonaro and Thayer Paxton finished second at 157 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively.

Gulosh is off to a great start this season for the Mids, posting an 8-1 overall mark with his only loss being in the championship match of the Navy Classic. Paxton dropped his first match of the season at the Navy Classic and is 8-1 heading into the PSU Open.

Heavyweight Tanner Garrett has been a pleasant surprise for Navy, tallying an 8-2 overall record. Garrett went 3-0 in the Mids' opening duals of the season and finished third at the Navy Classic and fifth at the Central New Jersey Open.

Last year at the PSU Open, Navy had five wrestlers place in the top five of their respective weight classes. Senior Travis Manion placed second in the 184-pound weight class, while Frank Edwards finished fourth in the 165-pound weight class. Team captain Mike Barikian won the fifth-place match.
