Mids Drop Pair at NorCal Tournament

Jordan Gentry scored four goal in Navy's loss to LBSU

The 12th-ranked Navy water polo team began play Saturday at the NorCal Tournament with a pair of losses to Long Beach State and UC Davis, Saturday in Avery Pool on the Stanford campus.

In game one against sixth-ranked Long Beach State, the Mids found themselves in a 5-1 hole early in the second period. Navy closed to within three goals several times in the game, but could not get any closer in an 11-7 loss. Jordan Gentry led Navy with four goals in the game.

"We were not able to control Long Beach's 2-meter player," said Navy assistant coach Carl Salyer. "That was the difference in the game. We played well, but just couldn't get on a roll. Every time we would score and think we had something started, they would answer right back."

The Mids would once again start slowly in their second game of the day against 18th-ranked UC Davis. Navy was down 3-0 early in the second period until the Mids offense came to life and scored three-straight goals of their own to tie the score at 3-3 on a goal from Nick Macola with 33 seconds remaining in the first half. Navy would again tie the score at 4-4 on a goal from Tim Fox with 4:37 to play in the third period, then took a 5-4 lead with 90 seconds remaining in the period on a goal from Patrick Rollo.

UC Davis would tie the score 25 seconds later, then would score the go-ahead goal with 4:54 left in the game. UCD added another goal later in the period for a 7-5 final score.

"UC Davis outplayed us from the start," said Salyer. "We did a good job of coming back and eventually taking a one-goal lead, but we couldn't answer their fourth-period goals."

Navy will continue play at the NorCal Tournament Sunday.
