Navy Water Polo Defeats Massachusetts to Capture Labor Day Open
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy water polo team captured the Navy Labor Day Open for the second-consecutive year with an 8-6 victory over Massachusetts in the championship game Sunday afternoon at Lejeune Hall. "The team played great all weekend, and I am was really pleased," Navy head coach Mike Schofield said. "What saved us today, outside of the first-two possessions of the game when we lost our minds, was our defense. It kept us in the game when we were really struggling on offense. Both goalies (Nick Hill - first half and Cody Acuna - second half) played great. We are blessed to have two great goalies. It is a big advantage, especially early in the year, to bring in a fresh goalie." Navy fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter to the Minutemen before Adrian Rawn (Jr./Greenwich, Conn.) tied the game at 3-3 at the 6:10 mark of the third quarter. UMass then took a 4-3 lead in the third, but Rawn, Patrick Rollo (Fr./Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Tim Fox (So./La Jolla, Calif.) scored the next three goals to give the Mids a 6-4 advantage. With 2:35 remaining in the game, Carlos Ramos' goal cut Navy's lead to 7-6, however Brendan Naeve's (Sr./La Canada, Calif.) goal with 21 seconds left sealed the win for the Mids. In the semifinals, Navy jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Queens and never looked back en route to a 10-6 victory. The Navy "B" squad defeated Grove City, 21-7, but dropped a narrow 9-8 decision to the Navy Aquatic Club in the 13th-place game. Navy returns to action Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m., when the Mids take on UC Santa Barbara in the Southern California Tournament.
