Barry Shaw Earns Academic All-District Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy water polo's Barry Shaw (Sr./Johannesburg, South Africa) was named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic District II University At-Large first-team it was announced today.

The Verizon Academic At-Large is comprised of the top student-athletes in cross country, ice hockey, soccer, swimming, and water polo in addition to other fall sports. Football and volleyball are not included in the at-large teams.

This marks the second-straight year Shaw has earned first-team academic all-district honors. Last year, he went on to be named Verizon Second-Team Academic All-America At-Large.

Shaw, a history major with a 3.94 GPA, helped lead Navy to a 20-6 record this year and a 9-6 victory over Princeton in the fifth-place game of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship. Shaw earned second-team CWPA All-East and All-Southern Division honors, while scoring 24 goals, tallying 11 assists and grabbing 39 steals for the Mids. He closed out his four-year career with 83 goals and 56 assists.

Shaw, a two-time selection to the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) Outstanding Academic Team, will attend graduate school at Georgetown University in the fall. He will also graduate second in the senior class May 24.
