68th Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championship -- Navy's Day One Review
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's and women's track & field teams began competing in the 68th Annual Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Ingram Field. The men's team sits in fourth place with a total of 22 points, while the women's squad rounds out the nine-team field with seven points. On the men's side, three Midshipmen pole vaulters placed in the top six in the event, earning Navy 15 of its meet points. Leading the way was senior captain Tom Delaney (Philadelphia, Pa.). He won the event with a height of 16'8.75", and narrowly missed clearing th bar in his three attempts at 17'5". Classmate and fellow Keystone State native Bob Koroly (Drexel Hill, Pa.) placed fourth with his vault of 16'2.75", while Bubba Durrum's (So./Mt. Pleasant, Texas) height of 15'3" was good for sixth place. Jacob Cahalan (Jr./West Warwick, R.I.) scored a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw (179'9"), while freshman Adriel Morgan (Portage, Mich.) placed sixth in his first-ever Heptagonal Championship in the long jump (23'4.75"). Rounding out Navy's point-scoring performances on the afternoon was sophomore distance runner Eric Eckstrand (Wilmington, Del.). Eckstrand caught a Columbia runner on the final lap of the 10,000m run, and sprinted to a fifth-place finish with his time of 30:36.67. Head coach Carla Criste's women's team had a pair of athletes score field-event points Saturday, led by junior Amanda Hasenauer (Sebastian, Fla). Hasenauer, who completed the 2001-02 academic year with an undefeated record in the pole vault during invitational and dual meets, placed third in the event with a mark of 12'1.5". Also scoring for Navy was Joanne Uwujaren (Jr./Burke, Va.). She placed sixth in the long jump with her leap of 17'11.75". Both of Navy's teams had numerous athletes qualify for Sunday's finals round, where 16 events on each side will be contested. For the men, Doug Kay (Sr./Amherst, Va.), Aaron Lanzel (Jr./Sugar Grove, Pa.) and Erik Schmidt (So./Spokane, Wash.) all placed in the top-four in their respective events. Kay enters Sunday's 800m final with the second-fastest preliminary time (1:50.36), while Lanzel and Schmidt had the third (3:54.10) and fourth-fastest (3:54.11) times in the 1500m run, respectively. Leading the charge for the women's team following Saturday's qualifying rounds is freshman sensation Tineisha Davis (Madisonville, Ky.). Davis enters Sunday with the fastest-preliminary time in the 400m (55.46), while also staking claim to the second-best 200m dash time (24.87). Navy's other three qualifiers from Saturday's preliminaries are all juniors. Shannon Crites (Powell, Ohio) will compete in the 100m hurdle finals (6th/14.61), while Lisa Procaccini (Vienna, Va.) placed eighth (4:35.63) in the 1500m preliminaries.
