PRINCETON, N.J. - Led by a fourth-place finish in the pole vault by Robert Koroly, the men's track & field team concluded a solid first day of competition at the 2001 Heptagonal Championship on the campus of Princeton University.

Koroly was one-of-three Midshipmen to place in field events Saturday. The junior out of Drexel Hill, Pa., posted a mark of 16'02.75" to place fourth in the pole vault, while teammate Tom Delaney (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished in a tie for sixth after turning in a mark of 15'09.00". Meanwhile, in the hammer throw, senior Geoffrey Miller (Tucson, Ariz.) tossed a mark of 51.92m to finish fifth in the competition.

Trackside, five Mids qualified for finals to be held Sunday. The most questionable of the three is junior sprinter C.J. Simonsen, who qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with the field's fifth-best semifinal dash of 10.96, but pulled up in the 200-meter dash heat with a hamstring injury. Tomorrow's competition in the 100-meter dash is in doubt for Simonsen.

Meanwhile, Douglas Kay (Amherst, Va.) ran the second-best heat of the afternoon in the 800-meter run (1:50.66) to qualify for the finals Sunday. A pair of young Navy runners earned the right to run in the 1,500-meter run finals Sunday, following strong heats. Freshman Erik Schmidt (Spokane, Wash.) posted a 3:51.67 in the first heat of the afternoon, while Aaron Lanzel (Sugar Grove, Pa.) just made the field with a 3:51.56 in the very next heat.

Finally, junior Brian Dembinski (McAlester, Okla.) not only won his heat, but posted the best time of the afternoon in the 400-meter hurdles to advance to Sunday's finals.

Competition at the 2001 Heptagonal Championship conclude Sunday.
