Mids Race Away With Victory

  • Box Score

Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey's squad ran away with a win Saturday.

The Navy men's outdoor track and field team dominated Colgate, LaSalle and Rutgers Saturday in the final meet of the season at Ingram Field winning 13 of 20 events to win by over 100 points. Navy finished the meet with 252 points, while LaSalle was second (144), Rutgers third (110) and Colgate fourth (87).

"The score was a little more lopsided than we had expected," said Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. "Rutgers had committed to another meet that they couldn't get out of and they sent their sprinters there. It would have been much closer if they had been here.

"I thought some of our guys were a little heavy-legged today and we weren't able to do some of the things we normally do. I was pleased with how some guys picked things up, so there was a little give-and-take there. We'll back off them a little this week as we get ready for Army and I think we'll be alright."

In the field events, the Mids won six of eight events. Adriel Morgan (Jr., Portage, Mich.) and Kelly Stephens (Fr., Houston, Texas) set season highs in the winning the long jump and pole vault, respectively. Morgan jumped 6.96m (22'10") to win by 0.3, while Stephen's cleared 4.88m (16'0") to set a career-high and qualify for the IC4A Championship. Nate Michael (Sr., Pilot Point, Texas) won the discus throw with a distance of 52.40m (171'11) and was second to teammate Ralph Lufkin (Jr., Basking Ridge, N.J.) in the hammer throw. Lufkin claimed first with a throw of 51.14m (167-9), while Michael's toss went 50.5m (166'2"). Michael finished second, as well, in the shot put with a distance of 15.46m (50'8-1/4"). Cole Herron (Fr., Sanger, Calif.) and Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) finished one-two in the high jump with clearances of 2.00m (6'6-3/4") and 1.95m (6'4-3/4"), respectively. Kyle Obrock (Jr., Boalsburg, Pa.) won the javelin with a throw of 61.38m (201'4").

In the running events, Navy was solid winning five individual events and both relays. The Mids finished 1-2-3 in the 110m hurdles with Adesina Ekundayo (Sr., Randallstown, Md.) winning in a time of 14.65, while Trevis Rainey (Jr., Lee's Summit, Mo.) (15.00) was second and Marcus Scarborough (So., Columbia, S.C.) third (15.04). Navy also dominated the 400m dash claiming the top five spots. Eric Porter (Sr., Brookeville, Md.) earned the win by nearly two seconds with a time of 48.04, followed by Matthew Bowman (So., Middletown, Del.) (50.01), James Thompson (Fr., Coleman, Texas) (50.35), Jamar Green (So., Pineville, La.) (50.44) and Cameron Lindsay (Fr., High Point, N.C.) (50.57). Samuel Spletzer (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) and Michael Levinson (Fr., Willingboro, N.J.) finished first and second in the 400m hurdles with times of 54.62 and 56.04. Eric Schmidt (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) ran away from the competition in the 3000m run winning in 8:17.98 with teammate Josh McCann (Jr., Magnolia, Texas) second (8:29.92). Shalimar Brazier (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) set a personal-best in 100m dash in an IC4A-qualifying time of 10.83. The Mids also won both relays winning the 4x100m in 42.30 and the 4x400 in 3:20.17.

The Mids travel to Army for an N-Star meet at 1:30 p.m.
