Navy Men's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season With A Victory
Links associated with this release: SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Navy men's track & field team kicked off its 2002 outdoor season by scoring a 98-67 victory over Point Loma Nazarene at the Point Loma Invitational late Saturday night. Williams (Mass.) and the University of San Diego also competed in the meet, but elected not to score points. The Mids (1-0) had one-two sweeps in a pair of events. In the 100m, indoor track captain C.J. Simonsen (Sr./Coon Rapids, Minn.) (11.11) and Shalimar Brazier (So./Detroit, Mich.) (11.21) had respective first and second-place finishes, while Jake Cahalan (Jr./West Warwick, R.I.) and Matt Reese took the top-two spots in the hammer throw. Cahalan won the event with a toss of 160'5", while Reese checked in with a mark of 120'11". Navy's other field-event winners on the afternoon were freshman Adriel Morgan (Portage, Mich.) and seniors Daniel Chapman (Glen Rose, Texas) and Steve Ranes (Phoenix, Ariz.). Morgan won the long jump in his first collegiate outdoor meet with a leap of 22'7.5". Chapman had a medalist leap of 46'9.5" in the triple jump, while Ranes won the shot put with a throw of 54'1". Brian Dembinski (Sr./McAlester, Okla.) sprinted to a winning 58.03 time in the 400m hurdles, while senior Mike Rea, an Annapolis native, placed first in the 800m with a time of 1:59.84. Navy's 4x100m relay team was also victorious, breaking the tape in a time of 42.65. The Midshipmen, led by head coach Stephen Cooksey, will play host to Delaware and Ohio in the first meet at newly-renovated Ingram Field March 23. The day's events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. |
