The Navy men’s track & field team will look to secure a spot amongst the Patriot League’s elite programs when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to compete in the 2002 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships (Saturday and Sunday) at Army.

“We are very excited to be competing in the league championship,” said 14th-year Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. “We are a little banged up going into the weekend, but we look forward to showcasing our talents in this competition.”

The Mids (4-1) last competed at the Feb. 8-9 Iowa State Track & Field Classic in Ames, Iowa. Doug Kay (Sr./Amherst, Va.) placed seventh, and broke his own indoor school record, with his time of 1:50.73 in the 800m run. He had previously run a time of 1:51.77 during the 2000-01 indoor campaign.

The distance medley relay team of Erik Schmidt (So./Spokane, Wash.), Eric Porter (So./Brookeville, Md.), Kay and Aaron Lanzel (Jr./Sugar Grove, Pa.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, to be held Mar. 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark., with their seventh-place-finishing time of 9:44.26.

Seniors Bob Koroly (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Tom Delaney (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought home top-eight finishes in the pole vault. Koroly placed sixth with his season-high leap of 16'6.75", while Delaney tied for eighth with a height of 16'0.75".

Also of note from last weekend, Mike French (Sr./Ellicott City, Md.) (14:29.76), Ben Morris (Jr./Annapolis, Md.) (14:44.67) and Eric Eckstrand (So./Wilmington, Del.) (14:48.32) all had qualifying times for the March 2-3 IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass., in the 5000m run.
