Eagles Defeat Mids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy opened its match against American by winning the doubles point, but the Eagles would win each of the six singles matches and record a 6-1 victory over the Mids, Sunday afternoon at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
The teams split the first-two completed doubles matches, with Navy winning at No. 2 and American winning at No. 3. At No. 1, Navy's Brandon Carter (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) and Alex James (Fr., Visalia, Calif.) rallied from deficits of 4-1 and 6-3 and fought off a pair of match points to post a 9-7 victory over Nicolas Frayssinoux and Sebastian Proisy to give Navy the doubles point.
"We did an excellent job in winning the doubles point," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We played good, clutch tennis."
Though American won each of the singles contests, Navy did have a number of good opportunities in almost all of the matches.
At No. 1, Juan Carlo Vasquez held off Carter, 6-4, 7-6, with the tiebreaker being decided by a score of 8-6. No. 2 singles also was close, with Frayssinoux posting a narrow 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win over Davy Lee (Sr., Tulsa, Okla.). The match at No. 4 featured Proisy picking up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Haley Dodson (So., Belleaire Beach, Fla.), while Jeffrey Schnell recorded a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 (tiebreaker used in place of a complete third set) win over Adrian Lai (So., Tucson, Ariz).
"I think the difference was American played the big points better than we did today," said Officer. "If we could have played a little better under pressure we could have won."
The Mids will now take to the road for a pair of matches this weekend. Navy will play at Lehigh Saturday morning and at Army Sunday afternoon.
