Mids Fall to Richmond

Adrian Lai

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond swept the three doubles matches and recorded a trio of singles victories in straight sets to post a 4-1 victory over the Navy tennis team, Saturday afternoon in Richmond, Va.

"I was disappointed today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "I feel we didn't play with a sense of urgency. We had some good chances in doubles, but Richmond played well enough to win."

Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up Navy's only victory of the day, winning a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) match over Brett Waikart at No. 6 singles. Lai also was the only Mid to win a match against Richmond when the two teams met during the Navy Tennis Invitational last September.

Richmond, winners of the Atlantic 10 Conference and an NCAA Tournament participant last year, improved to 10-6 on the season, while Navy fell to 8-8.

Navy will have a busy week ahead of itself with three Patriot League matches slated to be played in a span of five days, starting Tuesday afternoon when the Midshipmen play host to Bucknell. Weather permitting, the match will be played at the Naval Academy starting at 2 p.m. Should weather force the match indoors it will be played at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
