Navy Tennis Heads South to Battle Two Nationally-Ranked Foes
March 2, 2006 ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team hits the road this weekend for the first time in the spring season, battling a pair of ACC foes on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Mids take on North Carolina State at 10:30 a.m., then on Saturday, Navy will face off against North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. The Mids enter the weekend with an 8-2 record after last weekend's split with Yale and Georgetown. "We have an excellent opportunity this weekend against two nationally-recognized programs," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Both teams are nationally ranked and will present a big challenge to us. We will have to bring our very best game and compete very hard against both teams." North Carolina State enters the weekend with a 10-1 record and a No. 33 national ranking following last weekend's win over No. 31-ranked South Carolina, 5-2. The Wolfpack also owns wins over No. 19 Kentucky (4-3), No. 71 Old Dominion (5-2), Yale (4-3) and American (7-0). NC State's lone loss was to No. 34-ranked Louisville (6-1). Luchici is 14-4 on the season with three of his losses coming to players ranked either No. 1 or No. 2. Navy enters the weekend after a strong showing against Georgetown last Sunday, a 7-0 Navy win. The Mids are paced by Adrian Lai's 19-5 record in singles play. Lai holds down the Nos. 2 or 3 position and has a 7-2 spring-season record. In all, five Navy players have reached double-digit victories, including Nate Nelms' 14-9 record, Brandon Carter's 12-8 mark and Stanley Kahl's and Johnny Waters' 10-9 records. Waters has won seven matches in a row. In doubles action, Navy has a combined 17-5 record and has won the doubles point in eight of 10 matches.
