Tennis Team Wins Season Opening Match
 Brandon Carter |
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Navy tennis team opened its 2005 season with a 4-0 victory over Drexel at the Virginia Commonwealth 4+1 Invitational Saturday afternoon in Richmond, Va. Navy's scheduled 8 p.m. match against East Carolina was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
"We played excellent tennis today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "The guys were ready to play."
The Mids overcame some adversity at the start of the match as No. 2 singles player Stanley Kahl injured his ankle in warmups. Other than No. 1 singles player Brandon Carter, everyone else on the team had to move up a spot in the lineup. Navy still won each of its matches in straight sets, dropping only a combined six games in the four matches.
"We have had very, very good practice leading up to this weekend," said Officer.
Carter posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Walid El Jebbari at No. 1 singles, Davy Lee recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ilya Tunjic at No. 2 singles, Adrian Lai did not lose a game in defeating Keith Juaniza at No. 3 singles and Alex James won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Kellen Thomas at No. 4 singles.
The doubles match featuring Navy's Haley Dodson and Kyle Jones against Drexel's Pasquala Cardone and Asushya Wadhwan was not completed because Navy had already clinched the team victory.
Navy will open its home season Saturday with matches against UMBC (12 Noon) and Villanova (5 p.m.) at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
