ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving programs have both earned a pair of national honors over the last week for their academic and athletic accomplishments. Both teams earned Academic All-America recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for their performances in the classroom during the 2006 fall semester, with each also placing among the top-five teams in the final respective Mid-Major Dual Meet Ranking produced by CollegeSwimming.com(.)

Academically, the Navy men's team combined to post a 2.99 grade-point average during the semester to be placed on the national list, while the women's squad compiled a 2.80 GPA as a team during the term to also earn the accolade.

Both Navy programs also earned this honor for each semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Athletically, the Navy men's team ranked second in the final mid-major ranking, with the women's program placing fifth in their respective ranking.

The dual meet ranking uses an objective point system to compare teams' relative strength in a traditional thirteen-event dual meet lineup. Lineups are submitted by participating teams. Institutions eligible for the mid-major designation do not come from one of the eight major NCAA Division I-A football conferences or award fewer than seven women's or five men's scholarships.

Navy's men's program totaled 191.42 points to finish just 31-hundredths of a point behind top-ranked Princeton (191.73) in the final standings. The top-five teams were rounded out by Eastern Michigan in third place (189.22), Cornell in fourth (187.79) and Oakland in fifth (185.99).

The Mids posted a 165-135 victory over Princeton during the 2006-07 regular season, the first Navy win over the Tigers in 42 seasons. Princeton would go on to win the team title at the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championship, with Navy placing sixth at the meet.

Additional teams Navy faced during the regular season who appeared in the final ranking were Cornell (fourth place), Army (eighth), UMBC (16th), Bucknell (17th) and Penn (19th). The Mids, who compiled a 12-4 overall record during the campaign, tallied a 4-1 record against the previously mentioned programs. Navy's lone loss to the group was to Cornell.

Navy won its fourth Patriot League title in as many years this season, with Army placing second at the meet and Bucknell third.

The Navy women's team, meanwhile, accrued 180.53 points to finish just 8.35 points in back of top-ranked Harvard (188.88) and 89-hundredths of a point behind third-place Florida Atlantic (181.42) in the mid-major ranking. Princeton totaled 187.56 points to place second in the standings, while Miami (Ohio) finished just ahead of the Mids with 181.13 points.

The Mids posted a 3-1 record during the regular season against teams who also appeared in the final ranking on their way to compiling an 11-2 overall record on the year. Navy recorded victories over Bucknell (11th place), UMBC (14th) and Colgate (24th) this year, while dropping a 10-point decision to Penn (ninth).

Navy won its league-best ninth Patriot League title this season, with the Bison placing second at the championship and the Raiders third.
