Mids in Fifth Place at EISL Meet
The Navy men's swimming and diving team finished the first of three days of competition at the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League Meet in fifth place with 223 points. The Mids are just 24 points behind third-place Yale (247), and 23 points in back of fourth-place Columbia (246). "Friday is 'moving day' for us," said Navy head coach Lee Lawrence. "The guys are swimming great right now and we look to make a big jump up in the standings Friday." Navy began the day with a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The Navy foursome of Terrence Fenningham, Jon Rank, Michael Linn and Noah White finished the race in a time of 1:20.91, one-half second in back of second-place Harvard. After Sumner Rollings placed 17th (4:32.30) and Marshall Boyd placed 21st (4:36.50) in the 500 freestyle, Brian DeMell placed 24th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.97. Navy had placed two swimmers in the championship final of the 50 freestyle, as well as a third in the consolation final. In what turned out to be one of the fastest conference finals in the country, Navy freshman Mike Linn placed third with a time of 20.22 and Noah White placed eighth with a 20.67. Linn's time was a career best, while White swam a personal-best time of 20.39 in Thursday's preliminary heat. Terrence Fenningham, who saw his personal-best time of 20.45 in Thursday's preliminary heat place him one-one hundredth of a second out of the final, placed 11th in the consolation final with a 20.51. In the one-meter diving competition, Casey Gon placed fifth for Navy with a score of 277.70. The Midshipmen ended day one by placing seventh in the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:23.30. Competition continues Friday and Saturday at the Long Island Athletic Club.
