Smutz Earns League Nod

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Victories in both sprint freestyle events for the second-consecutive week helped Navy's Joe Smutz (Marriottsville, Md.) earn Patriot League Swimmer-of-the-Week honors, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. This marks the first time he has garnered the weekly honor from the league.

Smutz posted season-best times of 22.95 to win the 50-meter freestyle and 50.92 to win the 100-meter free over Cornell and Yale during a double-dual meet against the school's held Jan. 15 in Lejeune Hall. His win in the 50 free came by one second, while his margin of victory in the 100 freestyle event was six-tenths of a second.

Smutz also swam the third leg of Navy's victorious 400-meter freestyle relay team. With a time of 50.88, he was the lone swimmer to break the 51-second mark in the event.

One week prior to the meet against Cornell and Yale, Smutz posted victories in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events over Harvard, setting season-best times which would stand for only seven days.

Navy will return to the pool Jan. 29 when the Mids swim at Pennsylvania.
