Swimming Teams to Compete Saturday
Both of Navy's swimming and diving teams will be in action this weekend, with the men's squad competing in a double-dual meet against Yale and Cornell and the women's team playing host to Johns Hopkins. The men's team suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday, losing to perennial power Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., which dropped its record to 6-1 this year. Navy has posted a 3-1 record against Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League opponents, with wins to date over Brown, Dartmouth and Army, in addition to the loss to the Crimson. Cornell, the host for this weekend's meet, boats a 2-1 record this year with a victory over EISL member Pennsylvania and a loss to Princeton to its credit. Yale brings a 3-0 record to Ithaca, with Saturday's meets being the first of the season against an EISL foe for the Big Red. The diving portion of the double-dual meet will be held Friday, with the swimming events to be contested Saturday. "All three meets will be very close," said Navy head coach Lee Lawrence. "We feel very good about our chances." The Navy women's team will be in its first competition in five weeks Saturday when they play host to Johns Hopkins in a 1 p.m. meet at Lejeune Hall. The last time Navy took to the pool for a meet was Dec. 4 when the Mids beat Army, 178-122, in West Point. The Mids have posted a 7-2 record on the season and, after Saturday, have just two meets remaining before the Patriot League Championships in late February. After some time away from the pool following the Army meet and a limited practice schedule during finals week, Navy resumed training in earnest for the second half of the season during the holidays. The Mids held their annual winter training camp in South Florida, a time which head coach Dick Purdy said helped the squad. "The team worked hard on our training trip and accomplished what we had hoped they would," said Purdy. "It was a crucial, but successful week for the team as we look to continue preparing to defend our Patriot League title." Johns Hopkins makes the short drive from Baltimore with a 3-3 record this season.
