Jan. 11, 2006
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team, ranked 13th in the College Squash Association, opened the 2006 portion of the season with a 9-0 loss to sixth-ranked Penn on Wednesday night at Halsey Field House. Navy falls to 10-2 on the campaign, while Penn improved its mark to 4-2. "Penn is a strong team that is very good at every position," stated Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "I am not disappointed with our effort tonight. We couldn't string together enough games to get into the match. We will build off this." Navy's most competitive performance came from senior team captain Scott Hackman (McLean, Va.) in the No. 3 slot. After dropping the first-game to Spencer Kurn, Hackman rallied to a 9-7 win before claiming a 10-9 victory to take a 2-1 lead. However, Kurn came back to win the final games 9-4 and 9-6 to pick up a 3-2 triumph. Hackman's five-game setback was the first of the season after winning his first-10 matches. Freshman Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) battled back from 9-1 and 9-2 losses in the first-two games of the No. 4 position to win the third-game 9-3 before succumbing in the final game 9-3. Sophomore Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) suffered a 3-0 loss to Lee Rosen, the 22nd-ranked player in the nation. George fell by scores of 9-7, 9-3 and 9-4. Navy returns to action with an exhibition contest versus Team Annapolis on Friday (Jan. 13) at 5 p.m. before heading to George Washington next Wednesday (Jan. 18) for a 5 p.m. match.
