Nineteen Mids Earn CSFL All-League Honors


Sophomore Trevor Garabedian-Prophet earned First-Team All-CSFL honors.

Annapolis, Md. -- Nineteen members of the Navy sprint football squad garnered all-league honors, as voted by the coaches of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). Eight Mids received first-team All-CSFL accolades as Navy finished the 2003 season with a 3-1 record in the league and a 6-1 mark overall.

Navy's team MVP, senior Jamie Glines (Modesto, Calif./Central Catholic), earned first-team all-league honors as he helped Navy on every play, contributing 341 total offense yards and four touchdowns, 448 yards on punt and kick returns, 23 tackles and five pass break-ups.

Also earning first-team accolades is the Star Game MVP, sophomore Trevor Garabedian-Prophet (Ventura, Calif./Ventura), who finished the season ranked second on the team with 564 all purpose yards. Team co-captain and Sexton Memorial Trophy winner, senior Brett Jones (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Union), helped anchor the Navy offensive line that paved the way for 1,445 yards on the ground and 1355 passing yards and earned first-team honors for his efforts. Seniors Scott Lieng (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda) and Adam Matthews (Livingston, Wis./Iowa-Grant) also picked up first-team honors. Lieng was a valuable piece of the offense, accumulating 149 rushing yards and three touchdowns and adding another touchdown and 120 yards in pass receptions. Matthews led the team in receiving yards with 299 on 15 catches, four for touchdowns.

On the defensive side, three players earned first-team All-CSFL recognition as the Mids held opponents to only 224 yards and 12 points per game. Junior Charles Lewis (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) led the team in tackles with 45, including nine for a loss of 31 yards. Lewis also tallied three interceptions and three pass break-ups. Senior John Collins (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) ranked third on the team with 43 tackles. Collins posted 7.5 tackles for a loss of 19 yards, including two sacks. The senior also recovered two fumbles on the year. Junior Dane Brown (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) was fifth on the team with 32 tackles and posted a pair of sacks.

Seven Mids earned second-team all-league distinction as the Mids finished the year second in the CSFL. Senior quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) aided the Navy cause by throwing for 1,255 yards and 10 touchdowns, for an average of 179 yards per contest. Senior Matt Crompton (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) helped the offensive line that allowed Navy to gain 400 yards per game and score more than 33 points per match-up. Senior Joel Gow (Riverview, Fla./Providence Christian) ranked second on the team with 14 pass receptions for 219 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Randall Leslie (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley) led the team in rushing with 276 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side, co-captain Chris Zachary (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) ended his senior season with 29 tackles and three interceptions. Junior Michael Brock (Palos Park, Ill./Marist) totaled 31 tackles and three sacks, while freshman David Novotney (Chersterton, Ind./Chesterton) posted 44 tackles and four sacks.

Four Mids also received a nod with a placement on the honorable mention All-CSFL squad. Senior Maurice Chapman (Atlanta, Ga./Frederick Douglass) picked up 114 rushing yards and 77 receiving yards despite a mid-season injury that limited his playing time. Senior John Schindel (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) ranked fourth on the team with 36 tackles, including three sacks. Junior Francis Pascucci (Walden, N.Y./Pine Bush) was tabbed the team's Most Improved Player by the coaching staff and also picked up honorable mention accolades after recording 22 tackles, including one sack for a loss of 10 yards, despite missing the early part of the season with an injury. Sophomore Jake Owens (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington) finished the year with 239 rushing yards, second-best on the squad, and also ran in two touchdowns.
