Navy Sprint Football Opens League Play Friday at Cornell
Navy's sprint football team will kick off its 2002 Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) season Friday with a trip to Ithaca, N.Y., to battle Cornell. The Mids will be looking to defend the CSFL title, which they won with a 17-10 overtime defeat over Army last fall. Navy improved its record to 3-0 Sunday with a 22-9 victory over Army in the Pride Bowl in Newark, N.J. Reigning league MVP Chris Ashinhurst (Stafford, Va.) was 15-of-31 passing for 195 yards and two touchdowns against the Black Knights and also ranks as the team's third-leading rusher with 86 yards on 24 carries. Running back James Brobyn (Marathon, Pa.) leads the team with 200 yards on the ground. In each of the last two games, defensive end Dane Brown (Columbia, Md.) and linebacker Daniel Sweatman (Northport, N.Y.) have combined on a punt block that resulted in a touchdown. Brown has blocked both kicks, while Sweatman has picked up the loose balls for the scores, including a 25-yard return against Frostburg State. Cornerback Tim Gallagher (Bowie, Md.) leads the team with three interceptions, including two in the second half versus Army. "I feel the team is ready to go despite a short week of practice," said Navy head coach Maj. Jerome Rizzo, USMC. "We have had a good couple days of practice, and I think the guys are excited about opening league play. We're looking forward to a good trip to Cornell." |
