Navy's Clipper Lennon Named An Academic All-American

Senior Clipper Lennon was among the top 50 in his graduating class this spring.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior defensive midfielder Clipper Lennon (Westminster, Md.) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second Team which is put out by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The CoSIDA Academic All-America Team is comprised of 45 student-athletes, 15 each on the first, second and third teams, which represent the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. The team honors academic and athletic achievements from institutions nationwide, and those eligible were first-team honorees from their respective districts.

Lennon, who recorded a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average in the mathematics honors program, graduated from the Naval Academy May 27, and was ranked 40th academically in his class of 976. He was named to the Commandant's List all eight semesters and earned a spot on the Dean's List the last six semesters. He also strung together five-straight semesters with a 4.00 GPA, including last fall. Lennon has service selected Navy pilot, but will attend graduate school prior to flight school in Pensacola.

A 2005 Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, Lennon is one of the premier players in the country at his position. Without a doubt, he has been one of Navy's most reliable defenders during his four years who often draws one of the opponent's top offensive players despite playing with a short stick. Lennon helped lead the Mids to back-to-back Patriot League Championships in 2004 and '05 and played a major role in Navy's run at the National Championship last spring. Last season, the Mids finished No. 2 in the country in scoring defense, while this spring Navy's defense was the top-ranked unit in the nation, giving up just 6.63 goals per game.
