Annapolis, Md. - The Navy gymnastics team will be on the road for the second-consecutive weekend Friday and Saturday, as it competes in the West Point Open in West Point, N.Y.
In addition to playing host to the West Point Open, Army will also play host to the NCAA Championship April 8-9.
"We are expecting some improved performances from our younger guys," Navy head coach Sho Fukushima said. "However, not having competed with some of the big guns from other schools, it will be a challenge for them. On the other hand, this will be a great chance for us to be on the same floor with those stronger teams."
Navy posted a score of 203.50 to place third in a tri-meet against defending national champion Penn State and Temple last Friday at Rec Hall.
The fourth-ranked Nittany Lions won the meet with a score of 216.875, while Temple followed in second with a score of 207.325.
Senior team captain Josh Blackman (Fayetteville, Ga.) and junior Ben Peterman (Amherst, Mass.) placed second and third, respectively, in the individual all-around competition. Blackman recorded a score of 51.65, while Peterman posted a 51.20. Peterman's third-place finish came on the heels of his all-around title at the Navy Open last weekend.
Both Navy competitors finished behind Penn State's Luis Vargas - the 2004 NCAA Individual All-Around champion - for the all-around title in the meet. Vargas recorded a top score of 55.350.
Navy freshman Christopher Tam placed fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 48.450.
