Rogers Third-Place Finish Paces Mids at Georgetown Hoya Invitational
LEESBURG, Va. A disastrous final round of play dropped the Navy golf team from fifth to a tie for eighth at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational Monday played at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Va. The Mids owned a 3-over par 291 after the first day of competition and were seated confidently in fifth. But the Mids shot the second-highest score in the final round with a 303 and fell three spots. Meanwhile, Penn State, who was 4-under par after the first round, shot a 12-under par on the final day to claim the championship. Pacing Navy was senior Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) who led the competition after the first day. Rogers turned in a 5-under par 67 after the first 18 holes, just one stroke off the course record. In the final round, his par 72 left him four strokes behind the leader, Jason Harris of East Carolina, as Rogers finished third. Fellow senior Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) shot par, followed by a 1-over 73 to place 13th with a 145. Junior Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) finished 37th with a 151 (75-76), freshman Kyle Christman (Katy, Texas) placed 58th (77-82-159) and junior Rob Stochel (Crown Point, Ind.) rounded out play with a 65th-place mark of 169 (83-86). I thought we had a pretty good first day, said head coach Pat Owen, but our final day was disappointing. Nick (Rogers) had a great first day. He shot a 39 on the front 9 with three birdies and an eagle. The Midshipmen play their fall finale this Sunday and Monday at the Liberty Fall Classic. Competition will take place at the Crosswinds Golf Course in Savannah, Ga. Pl. School Scores 1. Penn State 284-276 560 2. East Carolina 288-282 570 3. Princeton 290-285 575 4.
