Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy golf team successfully defended its Star Match title Sunday, defeating arch rival Army, 740-769, at the USNA Golf Course on a cold and blustery day. The Midshipmen held just a 5-stroke lead (372-377) after the first 18 holes, but as the day wore on and weather conditions worsened, Navy appeared to get stronger. Navy extended its lead and victory to 29 strokes after the Mids shot a 368 in the second 18, while Army turned in a 392. Five of Navy's seven golfers turned in sub-80 scores in the last 18 holes, while five of the seven for Army were 80 and above. Leading Navy's second effort were seniors Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) and Marty Keogh (Newark, Del.). Craig, Navy's team captain, turned in the best second-round performance with a 1-over par 72. Meanwhile Keogh posted a 2-over par and owned the Mids' third-best score of the day at 8-over par (150). "I'm ecstatic for our team," said 11th-year Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Drew and Marty are 4-0 against Army in Star competitions. For our seniors to turn in our two best scores in the second round is a tribute to them." The top performer of the afternoon for either team was Navy junior Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.). Crum turned in the best score of the day with a first-round 1-under par 70. He followed up with a 74 to finish 2-over par (144). Meanwhile, Navy sophomore Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) and Army freshman Scott Manley posted 4-over par 148 performances. With the win, Navy has now won six of the last 11 meetings, including four in a row. The Mids take the week to prepare for the Service Academy Classic in Fort Worth, Texas, were they will face Army for the third time this season, along with Air Force.
