Army Holds Commanding 14-Stroke Lead Over Navy At Patriot League Golf Championship
Links associated with this release: WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army holds a 14-stroke lead over Navy after the first round of the 2002 Patriot League Golf Championship being played at West Point. The Mids, who own a 5-over par 285, are looking for their fourth-consecutive Patriot League Championship title. Navy will have its work cut out for it in Sunday's final day of competition, but it has had to come from behind in each of the last two league championships it has claimed. Army individuals occupy three of the top-five slots, including leader Kevin Lee who produced a 5-under par 65, while teammate Ryan Hazelton is in second with a 4-under par 64. Navy sophomore Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) is in third place with a 3-under par 67, while Army's Scott Manley rounds out the top four. There is a four-way tie for fifth place, which includes Navy junior Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.)at 1-over par 71. Other individual marks for Navy include an impressive day on the links for freshman Rocky Novellino (Bayville, N.J.) who is tied for 11th with a 73. Meanwhile, Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) is just a stroke behind Novellino in 13th with a 74. Rounding out the field for the Mids are Marty Keogh (Newark, Del.) in 22nd (77) and team captain Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) in 28th (78). The tournament resumes Sunday morning with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
