Navy Golf Tied For Fourth After Day One At Treasure Coast Classic

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Navy golf team shot a 14-over par 302 to position itself in a three-way tie for fourth after the first round of competition at the Treasure Coast Classic. The Mids also fielded a second team to compete in the 18-team tournament held at the par 72 PGA Country Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Navy Gold team is in 18th led by freshman Kyle Christman's (Katy, Texas) 5-over par 77.

With defending champion St. John's 28 strokes back, it appears a new champion will be crowned. Bethune Cookman has the early edge, owning a 2-stroke advantage over Florida Gulf Coast and is four strokes better than Liberty. Bethune Cookman's Adam Auger leads the pack of individual scoring with a 3-under par 69. He leads Towson's Billy Wingerd by just one stroke.

For Navy, junior Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) is tied for 11th with a 1-over par 73, just four strokes behind the leader. Team captain Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) is right behind Hurley in 15th with a 2-over par 74, while senior Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) shot a 4-over par 76. Rogers produced a 40 on the front nine, but turned in a 36 on the back nine. Rounding out the Navy Blue scoring were Joey Kistler (Savannah, Ga.) and Rocky Novellino (Bayville, N.J.), who each shot a 7-over par 79.

"I'm pleased with the way we played in the first round," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Our goal this spring is to improve upon our scores from the first round to the second. Last fall, we didn't do as good of a job as I would have liked, so I am looking forward to seeing how we play in the second round."
