CHARLESTON, S.C. - Navy shot an 11-over-par 295 to finish in a tie for third with nationally-ranked East Tennessee State after the first 18 holes of the Charleston Southern Kickoff. Played at the par-71 Coosaw Creek Country Club in Charleston, S.C., the host team Charleston Southern (285) owns a 2-stroke advantage over Elon (287) to lead the tournament. The 18-team tournament field is packed with talent led by Charleston Southern who is the defending Big South Conference Champion, while Elon is ranked among the top 30 programs in the country.

"I expected us to be a little more rusty than this," said 11th-year Navy head coach Pat Owen. "I'm very pleased with how we are playing. The quality of the field is very competitive. I look forward to our final 18 holes Tuesday."

Juniors Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) and Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) paced the Mids in the first round, shooting an even-par-71 and are tied for fifth in the individual standings. Hurt by penalty strokes and some tough luck Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) produced a 5-over-par 76. Senior team captain Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) is just a stroke behind Hurley, while senior Marty Keogh posted an 84.

The Midshipmen complete their final 18 holes Tuesday.
