Renninger Paces Mids to Eighth-Place Finish at Towson Fall Golf Invite
Sept. 19, 2006
MYERSVILLE, Md. - For the second-straight week, junior Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) paced the Navy golf team, this time to an eighth-place finish at the Towson Fall Invitational at the Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, Md. Tuesday afternoon. The Mids shot a 4-over par 288 in the final round to make the jump from a 10th-place tie to eighth. Boston College (282-295 - 577) held a 7-stroke lead over Saint Joseph's (289-297 - 586) heading into the final round and increased its lead to 9-strokes by the end of Tuesday to claim the team title. Bethune Cookman finished fifth in the tournament after an impressive final round where it put together a 2-under par 286 and made its move from 12th place. Meanwhile, LIU-Brooklyn fell from third place to ninth in the final round after posting a 13-over par 308 on the final day of competition. Towson's Jeff Castle claimed individual medalist honors with a 5-under par 139. He trailed Boston College's Jan Prokup after the first round by three strokes, but Prokup shot a 1-over par in the final round to place second. Similar to last week's performance in its season-opener, Navy struggled to put together two-consecutive days of solid golf. After the first day of competition, the Mids were alongside Rutgers in 10th with a 17-over par 305. But Navy made a strong comeback in the final round where it turned in the second-lowest mark of the day, a 4-over par 288 to leapfrog past LIU-Brooklyn (9th), Army (10th), Rutgers (11th) and Temple (12th) for an eighth-place finish. "In the first round, all five of our guys left a couple of shots out on the course and unfortunately we put ourselves in 10th place," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "We had a good round going on Monday, but we just didn't finish well. I think we played well two-thirds of the first round. Today we were able to finish down the stretch. "We still have a young lineup out on the course and we are gaining valuable experience each time we go out. I'm looking forward to putting together two good rounds in the near future." Renninger, who is coming off a fourth-place tie in the Mids' opener a week ago, finished just outside of the top 10 with his 1-over par 145. He was able to tie for 11th thanks to a 2-under par 70 in the final round. Sophomore Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) was also able to shave strokes off his score in the final round, posting a 2-over par on Tuesday for a two-day mark of 150 (+6). Classmate Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) shot an 8-over par 80 in the opening round, but did a nice job of regrouping and posting par in the finale for a 37th-place finish (80-72 - 152, +8). Sophomore Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) placed 41st with a two-round 153 (+9), while junior Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) rounded out Navy's scoring with a 10-over par 154. Three Midshipmen competed as individuals in the tournament, including junior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) who finished 19th. He celebrated his 21st birthday Monday with an opening-round 2-under par 70. Sophomore David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) also finished 19th with a 5-over par 149, while senior Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.) captured 60th with a 14-over par 158. The Mids return to action next Monday when they travel to the Kings Creek Country Club in Delaware to compete in the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational. ### Go Navy ### |
